About the Film

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine erupted in 2022, countless civilians were forced to flee their homes, becoming refugees in their own country. In the Rearview offers a deeply intimate and humanistic perspective on this crisis.

Shot entirely from inside vehicles used by volunteers transporting refugees to safety, the documentary captures spontaneous, raw conversations between displaced Ukrainians. These mobile interviews unfold in real time, revealing a mosaic of fear, resilience, trauma, and hope.

The car becomes both a literal and symbolic space of transition—where past lives are processed and uncertain futures lie just ahead. Maciek Hamela, himself a volunteer driver, creates a moving and innovative portrait of a nation in flux, told by those living through it.
