Hi! My name is Dr. Sonia Penaroza, and I’m an audiologist and the founder of Golden Ears Audiology Lakeway—a clinic I opened in 2024 with a simple goal: to bring compassionate, evidence-based hearing healthcare to families in the greater Austin area.

I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where I was deeply involved in our Ukrainian community. I grew up performing with the bandura ensemble Dniprovi Hvyli, and proudly served as head counselor of the Ukrainian Youth Association. Today, I continue that commitment here in Texas, where I currently serve as both a board member and the Director of the Choir at St. Andrew the First-Called, our local Ukrainian church in Austin.

After earning my Doctorate of Audiology from Northwestern University, I went on to serve patients at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center as a diagnostic audiologist and later became the lead clinical audiologist at Breathe ENT in Cedar Park, TX. These experiences prepared me to open a practice rooted in both clinical excellence and heartfelt care.

At Golden Ears, I see patients aged 9 months and older and offer a full range of services including hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, tinnitus management, auditory processing assessments, and cerumen (ear wax) removal.

But audiology isn’t just about ears—it’s about staying connected to life. One of the most important things I help patients understand is that hearing loss is one of the most preventable risk factors for dementia. When the brain doesn’t receive enough sound input, it can begin to shrink—a process called auditory deprivation. Early treatment, including hearing aids, helps preserve cognitive function, social engagement, and overall well-being.
